                             Roof Skylights and Leaks

To enhance the beauty of your home, getting a roof skylight installed is a wonderful way of going about it. It creates a dreamy and romantic touch to everything in the house apart from being beneficial in many ways.

There are so many new styles, sizes and functions of these modern day skylights that they have become indispensable for any modern home. Roof skylights bring in natural sunlight into your house and add to the style of your house. But those who install it are always worried about one problem and that is a leaking roof skylight. It can’t be denied that there is increased risk of a leak but if you install and seal your skylight properly, you can make your skylight absolutely leak proof and secure.

Skylights have a reputation that they always leak. But it is not so. You must not let this rumor stop you from installing a roof skylight that you have always wanted. There has been great progress in technology and techniques used in installing a roof skylight, and if the skylight is installed properly there is hardly any chance of it developing a leak.
Roof skylights are generally rectangular or square in shape. If you install these skylights as a fixed form of a part which is called the curb, then these skylights don’t move. It is generally said that these skylights cause leak, but it is not true.

Venting Roof Skylights

Nowadays there are new types of roof skylight that have a wide range of features. These features make the skylights very useful and also enhance the décor of your house. There are venting roof skylights which are excellent for fresh air circulation in your home. They have the added benefit of reducing costs of cooling the ceiling of the house by reducing the need for some extra cooling or using the ceiling fan to some extent. The air near the ceiling is automatically cooled when fresh air flows in from outside. These roof skylights are so designed that they open and close a little to let in the fresh air. The glass tilts at about 45 degrees.

There is a small handle to manually open the venting roof skylight. You crank the handle slightly to open or close or adjust the angle and position of the glass. The venting roof skylights are located in the ceiling of the house and are hard to reach, so there is an extension to the handle. Otherwise every time you want to open or shut the venting roof skylight you will need a ladder or a high stool.

Nowadays electronically operated venting skylights are also becoming very popular. There is a dimmer type of switch located in the room and with the help of this switch you may open, shut or adjust the venting skylight and even fine tune the angle to which you want it tilted.
Nowadays, the vent roof skylights have become virtually leak proof. The venting roof skylights have great flashing systems which prevent any sort of leakage. But don’t think that you may merrily leave the venting skylight open even during storm and rain. Then the water will definitely enter your house. In case the roof skylight has got wet all that you have to do is shut the vent roof skylight and wipe it dry.

Just like every other thing, you may accessorize the vent skylights too. There are shades, screens and many other window treatments available for the skylights. Thus you may customize even the roof skylight to create a dream house you had always imagined.
